Pancake Tuesday (+1)

This morning I realised that yesterday was Shrove Tuesday - I always seem to miss Easter relatated stuff in Japan... but, I figured we were close enough - only out by one day- so I made up a quick batch of pikelets (from pancake mix) and K and I had a lovely pikelet and jam morning tea to celebrate the start of lent.

Then I went out and bought a block of ghana chocolate - so I guess I won't be giving up chocolate for lent, haha.

Oh, and today is Ash Wednesday, but since we live in Japan, I am guessing we won't see people walking around with ash dots on their forehead, like we used to all day after Ash Wednesday mass.

And I guess while I am at it, I should make a note here that Easter Sunday is 12th April. Better remember that one.

  1. I am in Australia and did not realize it was Ash Wednesday yesterday until I saw a couple people at lunch time with ash on their foreheads.

Then a girl at work asked me if it was "some kind of crazy religious day" (her actual words) because she had seen them too. I said it was Ash Wednesday and she had NEVER heard of it.....

I remember having mass at LHC back in the day...

    The pancakes look delicious!

  2. In Victoria ash Wednesday is (also) the name given to a really bad bushfire that wiped out towns and killed people. The first time I met a Catholic person with Ash on her forehead I asked her why and she said 'celebrating Ash Wednesday' and I was horrified at such a crass thing to do. *^_^* Ooops. My family (obviously!) isn't religious but we always had pancakes on Shrove Tuesday and smoked cod in parsley sauce on Good Friday. I forgot entirely this year. Hmm maybe pancakes for dessert tonight.

  3. All of our relatives are in Victoria so the Ash Wednesday name always reminds me of the bushfires too.
Very thin tangent I am going off on, but Ash Wednesday always then reminds me of U2s "Sunday, Bloody Sunday". I used to wonder why they were swearing about Sunday. But also thought it was cool to be able to say the word bloody without getting in trouble because it was part of the song.
