hospitals, police stations and the big apple

On Christmas Eve (afternoon) after a long day out and about at playgroup, followed by lunch out with everyone (who would have thought I would want to eat after pigging out so much on Xmas day! lol) we got home, and I had just changed into room wear, with a nice pair of thick socks, put on the kettle and poured myself a cuppa, when I was coming down the three stairs between the kitchen and living room, and slipped and fell with a wham right on my lower right side/back, then my butt. There was tea all up the wall, and floor, and I was in a bit of pain. And I could feel a sense of dread wash across me....so I sat on the sofa for a while to recover and finished off whatever tea was left in the cup, while googling "falls at 22weeks pg". Most of them suggested calling the docs at least, so I rang up the clinic and they said they would recommend I come in for a check - I had 30mins to get there before closing, so rushed K out of the door to the clinic. Got there in time, had a quick one-over by the docs, ultrasound - baby all well and kicking as genki as usual, so relief there. Was glad I went to get checked tho, for my own peace of mind, otherwise I would have been worried about it until my next check up!!!

Xmas day I then ended up at the police station, as had to renew my drivers license, and only had until today (28th) so figured best not to leave it till the very last day. So we went on the 2nd last day! lol. They are now doing IC card licenses, so I didn't even get my new license on the spot - I have to go back in FEBRUARY (!!!) to pick it up.

Boxing Day we headed in to the big smoke of Tokes. J is being MC at a friend's wedding 二次会 so he was meeting with them at the restaurant for a 打ち合わせ. They invited me to come along too to have dinner after the meeting. We arrived about 4pm, K fell asleep on the train getting there, so was still asleep when we arrived. I walked around the shops (really just restaurants) and then sat down at Maccas with a hot apple pie and cuppa for a while. Then went off to check out the bookstore before we could meet up with them for dinner. They had Christmas Illumination at the building, which was quite nice, but there was soooooo many blue led lights, that my eyes actually started to チカチカする after a little bit! Got home near 10pm.

Day after Boxing Day - I think hitting the big apple got to us, and we all slept it. I even managed to sleep in until 10am!!! Yep, when K woke up (around 9am!), J took her downstairs for breakky which was nice. We walked down the road for Ramen for lunch, then it was just a quiet day at home, rearranging the upstairs bedrooms so that the bunk beds could fit in. We did up our Nengajo in the evening.

Today - dropped off some shirts at dry cleaning and got some more nengajo post cards for the ones we stuffed up yesterday (lol) then the bunk beds arrived, so we set up one in the "kids" room, and one in our room. Tried to get K to nap, but it was already nearly 3pm, so we just read Dora then came downstairs to take R for a big walk. Am hoping that K will crash tonight relatively early now. J is at a work do, his last day of work for the year before NY break. So K and I will eat turkey soup leftovers (again!!) and then try out her new bed! She seemed pretty excited about it, and even though we don't have a super cute sheet and doona set for her yet, so liked the one I did have with ants and 4 leaf clovers on it! The main thing was she wanted the pink blanket, so that might just be enough to keep her in her own bed!

Should be going away to the PIL for NY, either leaving tomorrow or Wed (I am pushing for Wed since J seems to want to stay for 5 (FIVE!!!) days. I think I need one more day of sanity at home to prepare for THAT one.

our christmas

We celebrate on the 23rd, the public holiday, with a roast turkey: first ever roasted in our steam oven, so was a bit apprehensive as to how it would go, but thankfully it went well, and we are still enjoying the bird in soup, sandwiches and anything else we can think of to get rid of it, lol.

We didn't go overboard with food - turkey with a few roast potatoes, steamed beans and honey glazed carrots, gravy and apple sauce.; tabara crab; salmon pressed sushi; pumpkin salad. It turned outto be just the right amount, and good mix at that.

PIL came over around 11am and we had lunch, after which Santa arrived to hand out the presents to K. She was super impressed with Santa and didn't even twig that it was daddy! Big presents included:

  • an anpanman kids computer (from jiji and baba)
  • thomas the tank engine play rail set (from nanna and pop)
  • my little ponies (from Aunty K)
  • Thomas the tank engine bath play rail set (from Daddy)
  • Dora the Explorer book set (from Mummy)
  • and lots of other small stuff like colouring in books, reading books, slippers, clothes....everythin under the tree was basically for K!

We bought PIL a digital photo frame, but since they have a Sony camera, got them a Sony photo frame, but it meant that I couldn't upload any photos of K onto it for them since we have a Casio. It was cool tho, and I think we should get one ourselves, for the piles of photos we take of K and R....

After presents, everyone (except K who was too excited playing with new presents) fell asleep, so in that sense, it was just like a Xmas at home in Aus, lol. I actually managed to bribe K upstairs into bed by reading her some Dora books, and she ended up having a nap, so it wasn't too bad. We started again for dinner, leftovers with added Chili Prawns (this was what almost ruined Xmas day for us....J had bought some prawns, and said that he would bake them or something nice. I therefore figured that was what he would do. So when I came downstairs Xmas morning after making the bed for PIL (who stayed over) and cleaning upstairs rooms, I was SHOCKED (to say the least) when I saw him making a chinese chili sauce. He said he was making えびチリ for lunch. I might have muttered under my breath a bit, then went upstairs cursing him and his stupid chili prawns on Xmas Day of all days. An altercation ensured (him calling me selfish for saying that we were not having Chili prawns on Xmas Day, and that Xmas was *not* all about me) but he actually apologised later when he realised that when I said Xmas was mine, I meant that it was my culture, my special day and that the choice of えびちり was probably not the best for such an occasion. In the end, we put it out for dinner with the leftovers, and his parents did enjoy it, but there was NO way I was gonna eat it, lol! And imagine having it for lunch?!!? Sorry, that was just so NOT on my Xmas wish list.)

I also managed to source out a Christmas Pudding a couple of days before Xmas, so I pigged out the whole day. We had that with individual strawberry shortcakes for dessert after dinner.

I must admit that for a Xmas in Japan, it was not all that bad (lol) def. better than previous ones. Although it still doesnt cut it when I think of everyone at home around the pool ALL DAY, and all Boxing Day....

We rang everyone on Christmas Day - this year my parents went down to my Auntie E's place in Victoria for Xmas. When I as little, we used to go there every year, when my Granny was alive. I think it has been a while since my parents have celebrated Xmas away from Bris too. So everyone was ばらばら this year anyway. When I spoke to my sister, she said it didnt feel like Xmas (her kids were down in Vic with my parents too, lol) and I said that I hoped to get back next year for Xmas in Aus...then I spoke to my brother, and he said that they are thinking of coming to Japan next year for Xmas, then to go skiing in Hokkaido over NY, and will we be here in Japan for Xmas next year. Hmmm. it would be cool if family came over for Xmas. I might have to try to convince my parents, and also my sister, or at least my nephew and neice to come over (my sister prob wont be able to, realistically, as she got sick on the plane to Melbourne, lol). Looks like next years Xmas will be interesting too.

sleep, soba, shopping, sleep, sushi and sleep again

    Long Day.
Got a not so early morning phone call from FIL (at 9:45am) suggesting that we do the shopping for K's Xmas present today (rather than Wed when they come over for Xmas lunch). I agreed it would be a good idea, but would have to wake J and ask him first too. (Yes, *some* people get sleepins, it seems....) An altercation later (apparently *I* didn't want to go today so was making things difficult by not writing down the address in Japanese for the Toys'R'Us store close to PIL house, sigh) and we left to pick PIL up(an hour away), drop by a soba joint for lunch, swing by Toys'R'Us (along with every other Tom, Dick and Hanako) to get a suitable present for K from PIL (anpanman kids computer thingy - I suggested a cash register and also a dolls house, but since they didn't make the grade this time, we will save them for her birthday in April), drive back via a home centre as K had fallen asleep in the car, keep going to the popular sushi joint where we lined up for about 45mins, maybe longer, IN THE COLD to get a seat for 3- (there are 5 of us!!) then when a seat for 2 came available, PIL went there to eat, so we didn't even end up sitting together for dinner that THEY paid for, before heading back to PIL house for cake (I refrained, gotta pretend to be doing something to slow down the weight gain for next docs check) and then getting home just after 9pm, and K asking J to put her to bed. Where he still is, obviously sound asleep too. again.

    Long Day.

    ***********

I have wrapped most of the presents tonight now - cleverly using a mix of wrapping paper, butcher's paper and チラシ (as I have a slight eco streak in me, and figure K is only gonna rip the paper to pieces anyway, not like in our house in Aus where everyone has to open the presents carefully as the wrapping paper gets recycled for about 10years in a row.)

I am the master wrapper, btw. The (self-appointed) "official" wrapper-up-er-er in the household in Oz, and have been for a few years now. Usually up late on Xmas eve wrapping, so am giving myself a pat on the back for having things wrapped a week before Xmas! The tree is starting to look good with all the presents underneath it. Actually, the tree is starting to be dwarfed by all the presents underneath it (we so should have bought the next size up, lol
(yikes! on it's side AGAIN - it was the right way round in my photo album on the comp....although the original photo was たて. who knows?! not me thats for sure)
I decided to hang the Xmas cards ON the tree this year too, since we don't have enough to string along the wall, but too many to just sit on the shelves behind the tree. And that santa figure at the front is also a hand-me-down(?) from MIL tonight. I remembered that we have some small Xmas decorations in a box in the loft, so am gonna get J to bring that down tomorrow, and might even add more stuff to our Xmas "corner".

Oh, and this is the cute bowl K's pudding came in tonight, together with a nice little candle holder MIL gave us as we were leaving. cute, hey!

    21weeks update

I had a check up on Wednesday, 21w1day.

TJ-baby is perfect sizing for 21weeks, so maybe the EDD is right? Got a cute face shot, that I thought looked pretty obvious, but when I showed it to J he was like "what is this then?" lol. The stock-standard ultrasound pictures are pretty hard to fathom. I think they have a 4D ultrasound facility at the clinic, but I don't think it is included in regular checkups, so I probably wont get one.

I told the doctors that we don't want to know the sex, and he was like, "good, because there is a 50-50- chance either way" hehe. The nurse then turned around and said "personally *I* would like a boy, coz I want to see a cute little blond boy running around" . When the doc gave her a wierd look, she added "have you seen how cute her daughter(K) is - I bet a boy would be kakkoi". So I guess there is one vote for a boy. I am still uncertain either way. With K, I did think until about 30weeks that it was gonna be a boy, but I was carrying too round, as opposed to the classic "boy out the front pregnant belly look".

I got a red line underneath my weight gain....3.2kg in a month. I am supposed to keep it to 2kg/4weeks. oops. I have to say the doc was not too 厳しい about it, it was just kinda a good reminder just to keep things under control a bit. Anyway, my starting point with this pg was higher than that with K, so I am already only about 3kg away from my final weight with K! lol. I think it was my recent craving for peanut butter (as in, by the SPOONFUL!!) that might have helped me stack on the weight this time. Am trying to keep my meal sizes down a bit now, and have even been giving half my rice to K - she is being a bit piggy and eating up a storm again!

I am finding TJ-baby to be pretty active (and how the hell does s/he get from one side of my belly to the other in a split second?) all day and night long, seems much more active than K. We haven't really thought of names yet - I was a bit pissed off when J and I had a quick chat in the car on our way to Gunma, and I gave my favourite boy/girls names, then he went and told his mates when we were at the end-of-year party a few weeks ago...I think he thought I was joking with the choice of names I mentioned, but I was quite serious! With K we didn't decide until after she was born, but we had made lists. K was one of the name on the list. We had to think of the kanji while in hospital tho. And I spent the first few nights mispronouncing K's name anyway, lol.

My back is playing up recently - even bending over for a few seconds and it gets really sore. Vacuuming sucks. As does cleaning the bath. Might have to give up housework altogether soon - "pregnancy related" of course (lol). Mum reminded me that my back hurt when I was pg with K too.

I get my swine flu vaccination next Monday afternoon (finally!) which will be a bit of a relief - more psychological than anything.

Other than that, I have been lucky to get a few hand me down maternity clothes and baby stuff this time. We never really bought much with K, so this time we got a cot passed on to us (I actually had offers for 3 different cots!!). If we knew the sex, I could stock up on clothes too as necessary, but since we are not asking, I am not taking baby clothes yet.

I can't believe that I am half-way there...only another 20weeks (well, less hopefully) until TJ baby joins us. How exciting!

    the week before Xmas

I haven't been blogging much, as I seem to find myself out and about the last few days/weeks running all sorts of errands, doctors visits, shopping expeditions, christmas parties.....I guess it is just silly season business.

Have got a few things under the Christmas tree - all for K of course. Another package arrived today with stuff from my brother. I think she will really enjoy Xmas this year! I have a turkey we are gonna roast up on Wednesday 23rd when PIL come over for our Xmas celebration. Still have to decide what else to put on. Am kinda excited - first Xmas in new house and all that jazz.

    Anyway, the week in review:

    * Mon - already I can't remember! Oh, hang on - I....nope, no idea. Ah, ok just checked out my 家計棒 and saw I bought stuff at Ito Yokado, so remembered we went down to the bank to pay a tax bill (ugh!and it took forever. had to pay at bank since it was overdue, oops!) then got some stuff for the pot luck party on Tuesday. Afternoon a write off with naps. Also was my nephew's bday last week, so finally got to skype him, which ended in an hour long chat to my sister, also a half hour skype to mum so absoulutey nothing else done in the afternoon!!

    * Tues - had a Xmas party at our old playgroup. It is a fair way away, so we didn't get back until after 3pm, and K was still sound asleep in the car until after 4pm!

    * Wed - had apt in the morning at ob-gyn (will post about TJ-baby's progress in a separate post I think) then we drove to shopping centre at the next train station area, to see if I could get a Xmas present for my friend at home....no luck. But I still managed to buy up heaps - I am so in a shopping spending mood at the moment. yikes. So much for our budget AGAIN this month, lol. Also wanted to check out what kinda toys are around for K for Xmas - so that when PIL come over next week for Xmas lunch, I have an idea of what to tell them to get (We are going shopping together to get K a present that day too)
Came home to have lunch, but then realised I still had heaps of Xmas cards to post, and really had to get present for friend, so skipped K's nap and we kept shopping by car again in the afternoon. She was a trooper, out all day with no nap. Found something somewhat suitable for friend, so posted off cards and presents in afternoon.

    * Thurs - ended up taking K down to peds as she came out with a rash on Wed night all of a sudden. It looked like someone had slapped her face, and it had been attacked by a hoard of mozzies to boot. When we hopped in the bath, it came out all over her back, and she spent most of the night scratching in bed. It had gone by the morning, but we went anyway, the doctor said it was 蕁麻疹(hives), gave us some syrup to try to prevent it coming out again (for a week at least) and cream to stop the itching. After docs, had to ems a package to J's host family in the US with rice crackers, dried squid, character candy stockings for the kids....we always leave it to the last minute, hope it arrives. Then stopped off at the shops AGAIN this time to get some fleecy lined wind proof pants for me (for night time walks with R) in Mens XL!! and some pants for around the house for J (in Mens M!!!- something wrong with this picture, right, lol!)

    * Fri - finally a day at home! Spent morning cleaning, and actually feel like I accomplished something. Amazing how much you can get done in a morning. We usually use the mornings to go out, so that we can be home for K's nap, but the afternoons go so quick, and if I end up napping too (being all worn out from the morning activities, preggo excuse that I am using a lot lately) then NOTHING gets done. Since it was nice weather, we got 3 loads of washing done, plants got watered (they were almost on their last legs - my thumb is anything but green!), bathroom got the full treatment, upstairs got aired out all morning and then refreshed with incense burning now, made a batch of cookies, cleaned out the kitchen and rubbish bin. Still have a pile of stuff to do this afternoon, but am taking a peanut butter s/w break now with K while watching Ii tomo.
    back again....
After lunch I did a quick vacuum, put K down for a nap and decided that my aching back and I needed more "down time" so put the kettle on, and settled in to watch "Gary Unmarried" with a cuppa and a biccie or four. I am watching the pilot episode, as all my fav shows are on holidays over Xmas, so no newbies online to see. And already it is nearly time for K to wake up again....too fast for my liking.

On another note, it seems that whenever we go out by car to the shops, it seems to take up a whole day each time. Or maybe I just really haven't been out "shopping" for so long,I forgot how tiring it is walking around shops and shopping centres. Until recently, our shopping has really been in and out of the grocery store as fast as we can type stuff. I guess it is a good thing to see that K has got to the stage where we CAN go out for a morning of shopping without it being a disaster (unless of course Daddy comes, in which case K seems to turn into devil child - I guess she is just playing J and me off against each other, but still, doesn't make for happy mummy or happy families. lol)

    bedding down

Have been thinking about the bedroom lately (not in a light the candles and get jiggy with it way), but we still haven't got anything set up in the upstairs rooms. Well, the old cheapie bed frame we had before is up, so we are not sleeping on the floor, but otherwise nothing.

I am uncertain what to do about the bedrooms. There are 2 upstairs.

I think I have written before that we co-sleep, but at the moment we have a make-shift side bed for K out of futon mattresses. It doesn't really help, and we end up being squashed in together (with K kicking at ME all night/early morning). I want to get something worked out for the bedrooms before TJ-baby arrives, but realistically, since our latest electricity bill came in, I don't think it is feasible during winter at least, to have seperate bedrooms. So what do we do?

J wants to buy bunk beds for the "kids" room, and a double bed for us, in the main bedroom, probably that has storage underneath it. But I also want the "kids" room to double up as the guest room, at least for now. We still have futons we can use in the third room(downstairs) in a pinch, but for J's parents when they come, and if my parents come for TJ-baby birth, then I think they would be best put up in the 2nd room upstairs. So if we got bunk beds, it would need to be beds that can also be used as singles (not the pipe type) which then cuts out the IKEA bottom is a double bed/top is a single bed bunk bed which I think is really cool (and it always reminds us of a hostel we stayed in at Foz do Iguacu, on the Brazillian border, near Iguassu falls.) Also, I can't see bunk beds being useful until K is a LOT older. I even saw a triple bunk bed (with a trundle bed underneath) that I would like to get, but again, it wouldn't be useful until at least mid-primary school age, I would think.

But if we put a double bed in there(kids room) now, K probably won't sleep there anyway, but will end up still sleeping in with us, so it doesn't really solve any problems, I guess. Even a half of the bunk bed, still means that if someone comes, we need to fiddle around and set up another bed in the room for them.

Do we therefore attempt a family bed in the bedroom? (I already have a cot for TJ-baby, which I am hoping to put beside our bed, for easy night time feedings) which means we will have to also add a single bed to the equation for K, because we can't all fit on the one bed for much longer and still stay sane.......but I then the baby will probably keep K awake during the night AND the room will end up being FILLED with beds, and no space for anything else(I would like to get some built-in cupboards for the room too ....but don't want to end up with no floor space! lol). And I can't find a bed in Japan that floats my boat at all...they all look so BORING and THE SAME.

Aaarrrgghhhhh. Who would have thought just trying to get some zzzz's would be so difficult to work out?

    忘年会 in Gunma

Although we went last weekend, I never got around to finishing the post. Better late than never, I guess.

Last Saturday we left home around 11am, stopped off for lunch at くら寿司 then headed down the 関越 to Gunma for an end of the year party, staying overnight at a ryokan, with J's friends from when he was on working holiday in NZ. We catch up with these guys several times a year, I guess they are like his "group of friends".

Anyway, Y picked out the ryokan, a place called ひがきホテル at 水上(みなかみ).
It even had a pool in the gardens, pity it wasn't heated...

Apparently Minakami is a pretty well known onsen town. Unfortunately it poured raining most of the way there, so even though we got there at 3pm, we just checked straight into the hotel and stayed in the rest of the day. A bit of a chat, some ocha and snacks with the others, then a dip in the onsen before dinner. The onsen was pretty hot - K and I sat in the "tepid bath". I attempted to go outside to the 露天風呂 but K wouldn't be in it - "too cold" she said, lol. There was still no snow around anywhere, so it couldn't have been *that* cold outside!?!

Dinner was served in a private room, with little trays for each of us set up. K ate a bit, then played with H-chan 一応仲良し....well, there was only tears once in the night, when a fight broke out over the swinging door, and who could hide behind it. After dinner K and I pretty much fell straight asleep, while J and the rest partied on in the part-ay room nextdoor until 1am.

The next morning we had a lateish breakfast at 8am, then J and K went for an 朝風呂 before checkout. We stopped by the 道の駅 and picked up some veges, went for a walk to a bridge that goes over a part if the river that feeds the 利根川,
and they use for rafting, and then had some lunch at a soba joint(そば処 角弥) where the guys shared a 5人前 between three of them....
I think they did a good job!

I enjoyed the vege tempura with zaru soba for 1250yen (K ate most of my soba), and J had the 舞茸tempura with zaru soba, 大盛り for 1500yen.

Then we all drove to our respective homes, with a quick Tulleys stop at 高坂SA on the way home...I tried the tiamisu latte, which was lovely and creamy, but made me feel a bit sick afterwards.

    yikes

I am having a bad day of it I think. Nothing major, just little things like, so far this morning I have:

  • stood in front of the wrong elevator while the other one opened and shut and left without me
  • when going to get out of the carpark - forgot I had to put ticket in to open the boom gate, so drove car right up the left side to make a big turn, only to have to stop the car, put it in park, with park break, wind down the window AND open the door to put the carparking ticket in.
  • then I tried to drive out with the car still in "park".
  • then I realised I had come the wrong exit anyway
  • got stuck in traffic trying to get back to the road I needed to get to
  • basically slammed on the breaks to stop at a GREEN light. Granted, it was one of those stupid Japanese lights that has a green straight ahead arrow, with a big round red light above it, so I am giving myself the benefit of the doubt for that one, lol And there were no cars behind me, thank goodness.
  • mounted the kerb going through the Maccas drive thru (thought a choc mcshake and cheeseburger would "fix" me, I know, I know, was gonna be "good".....no more junky food from tomorrow, I promise, lol)

ok, so it is all basically car related things. makes me think maybe I just shouldn't be driving!!

I had a good sleep last night, first time in a while. I have been having trouble sleeping, tossing and turning trying to get comfy. Lying on one side on the futons was making my legs ache. So last night it was back to the bed, with the nice comfy matress, but less room for us to sleep - futons give us more room to "breath" and escape from K's relentless kicking during the night. I set up a a side-car type bed for K on the side of our bed. It is too cold to be sleeping in different rooms, sleeping together keeps us all warmer, esp K who ALWAYS kicks off the blankets. I bought her a sleeping bag, but she won't wear it, actually, she has started taking her p.j.pants off at night too, which I think she got from J, who sleeps in just undies. Anyways, I have to keep covering her all night too so she doesn't freeze!
Have also been a bit off in general the last few days - tummy is crampy and I haven't had much of an appetite at all. I think I am gonna have a cruisy afternoon, bugger the housework, am gonna put on my uniqlo room pants and read magazines while K naps.

    birthday cards

I have been searching for 3 days now for a b'day card for my nephew. He will turn 13 in 10 days, and I have to get the card off to him soon or else it will be arriving with the Xmas post. But I am having a lot of trouble actually finding a card. Just a simple happy birthday card, even. I have had troubles in the past with this too, and even went through a stage of buying up when back in Aus, but this time I am cardless. I know that places like Loft and proper stationary stores have cards, but I haven't been near any of those sort of shops in the last few days - I have been supermarket and 100yen and don-quiote type shopping. Even that takes up all my mornings, and by the time I get home it is nap time, then dinner prep time.....

To get to a store that will possibly have a card involves a trip most likely by train to the big department stores. Not my idea of fun! So I was hoping to find somehting suitable along the way, but nope. Even the 100yen shop(s) have been hopelessly card-less (unless I want to send him a Xmas card instead, lol) So I am wondering if we just make our own card to send. K has done some drawings for him, maybe we could print off a card. I just wish it was as easy as stopping by the paper shop and picking up a card, like it is at home.

*sigh* Must be having a "wishing I was home" moment.

    Expat Express

A few weeks ago I was complaining about not having any clothes to wear, and asked for suggestions on how to order from o/s. It started out with me wanting some maternity clothes, so I looked on "motherhood" and while they ship internationally, the shipping cost is determined by the cost of the clothes you buy, so up to $100 costs $55 to ship. We have also bought stuff from REI in the past, and they have the same shipping pricing policy. The only problem with REI is that they wont ship certain brands to Japan. This is probably because the retail price in the US is often half if not less what you pay in Japan for EXACTLY the same items.

Anyway, Illahee suggested Expat Express (thanks!), so I tried them out, and I have to say that I was pretty impressed. You do all your online shopping as normal, pay by your own credit card, and get the items shipped to their US address. You can buy from as many stores as you want, Expat Express will re-pack everything into one box and send it to you in Japan, with the shipping price based on WEIGHT.

This time I bought from Old Navy, Motherhood (cheap and comfortable maternity tees and hoodies, and some cute long sleeved shirts for K) and also from REI (3 pairs of shoes!!!, one for me, 2 for J, and some camping equipment for J). I also ordered a pair of room pants for me, but not knowing American sizes, I messed up and ordered way too big. But I guess that is the risk of buying online. The shirts all fit perfectly, and shoes, I already had the same shoes so just ordered the same sizes and no problems there.

Expat Express charged a flat rate of $15 for each order, then $1 extra for every item over 10items, so for 20 items, we payed $26 handling. The shipping was a mere $47.87, so I think it worked out pretty cheap! We had to pay the customs fees when the box arrived, as COD to the shipping company, which was a bit of a bummer (as sometimes in the past, it has been hit and miss, and we have gotten away without having to pay these fees in some cases) but it was only 10% of the entire order, which I think still worked out cheaper than if we had have tried to buy through each store individually.

If you are looking at buying a few different things, from different shops, I would recommend Expat Express. From the time I ordered until everything arrived only took 2 weeks - a week or so for each shop to send to the US address, then as soon as the last item had arrived, Expat Express shipped it out to us straight away, and it was here in 6 days.

All in all a happy shopping experience! I can see my credit card getting a work out in the future like this...
